Lydia Hinojosa

RIO GRANDE CITY - Lydia Hinojosa, 96, died at her daughter Sharon's home surrounded by her family on Thursday, September 3rd. She was born in Rio Grande City to Albino Hinojosa and Manuela Longoria de Hinojosa on October 31, 1918. Preceding her in death were her parents, her son, Clyde Newell (Eddie Boy), her brother Noe Hinojosa and her sister, Dora Hinojosa Salinas.

Lydia is survived by her daughter Sharon Newell Munoz, and her granddaughters Virginia Newell, and Lisa, Laura, and Anna Cecilia Munoz, her nephews and nieces, Noe (Wayo) Hinojosa, Carmen Uribe (Luis), Maria de Rosario Chavez (Bob), R.C. Salinas (Silvia), Lydia Elizabeth Reyna (Amador) and numerous grand nephews and nieces.

Lydia was a businesswoman, an educator, and a rancher. She was part owner and operator of A. Hinojosa & Bro., Las Viboras Ranch, and had numerous assignments within the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District. She attended and graduated from the local Catholic School, Rio Grande City High School, and Our Lady of the Lake University where she graduated with a degree in English.

Within the R.G.C.C.I.S.D. she taught at the old Central Primary School, North Grammars, Ringgold Intermediate, Ringgold Junior High, La Union, and Grulla Elementary. She was recognized for her one act plays and poetry interpretations. Lydia worked tirelessly until all students involved were at their peak. Her colleagues would tease her about working so hard yet not being able to watch her students compete. She produced many creative parade floats during her retirement years, but was also unable to watch them travel on the parade route. She was a passionate woman who colored the lives of all that knew her. She will be remembered for her adventurous spirit and will be dearly missed by her loved ones.

Funeral arrangements will include a viewing at Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City on Sunday September 6 from 2 pm to 7 pm. A rosary will be held beginning at 7 pm on that day. Church services will be held on Monday September 7 at 11:30 am at Immaculate Conception Church of Rio Grande City.
