IN LOVING MEMORY OF
David Daniel "D.D."
Saldana
October 19, 1947 – January 16, 2026
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of David Daniel (DD) Saldana, who departed this life on January 16, 2026, at the age of 78 at the DHR Health Hospice in Edinburg, Texas, surrounded by his family. Born on October 19, 1947, DD was cherished by family, friends and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
DD was preceded in death by his father, Horacio F. Saldana, his mother, Ella Lou Saldana, his brothers, Ricardo H. Saldana, Horacio F. Saldana and his sister, Teresa B. Saldana and his daughter Melissa Ann Saldana.
DD worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor for 18 years from Harlingen to Houston and from Brownsville to Matamoros, working both offshore and across Texas in the oil and gas industry. After a 10-year absence from the railroad, he returned to the Rio Grande City to work for the Border Pacific Railroad, choosing to stay closer to home while continuing his role as a conductor. His dedication and work ethic were evident in every role he took on, earning the respect of his colleagues and friends alike.
Beyond his professional achievements, DD was an amazing cook who brought his family and people together through his culinary talents. He participated and competed in many cookoffs for charitable causes, sharing his love of food and community with everyone around him. Above all, DD loved to share his talents, always finding joy in bringing happiness to others through his generosity and culinary skills.
DD was a man of Christ, faithfully receiving communion every Sunday. He was known for his faith, grace and strength with which he coped with ALS for 15 years.
DD is survived by his loving wife, Diana Lopez Saldana, his daughter Ella Lou (Alfonso) Perez, his sons, Jose David (Mary Lou) Saldana, David Daniel (Justine) Saldana. His sisters Diana Saldana, Maria Isabel (Dr Juan Jorge) Saenz, Dolores Mullinax, Ana Lou (Greg) Berryhill and Carmela Saldana, nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
