Edna Lydia Ramon, of Rio Grande City, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2016 at
Monticello West Nursing facility in Dallas at the age of 90. Her husband of 62 years, Felipe Ramon, passed away in 2010. She is survived by her sister, Delia Gleber of Dallas, her four children--Dr. Victor Ramon (Frances) of Dallas, Rebecca Wilkinson (John) of Wayne, Pennsylvania, Edna Butts (George) of Austin, and David Ramon (Kay) of Hutto, ten grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
The middle child of three was born to Rafael Ramirez and Emilia Schunior Ramirez on June 28, 1925 in Edinburg Texas. Her parents championed higher education. Edna graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1946 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition. After graduation she taught for a few years, eventually attracting the attention of her future husband, Felipe, in a café in Rio Grande City. They married in double ring ceremony along with her sister, Delia, and Joe Gleber. Together, Edna and Felipe owned and operated the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Rio Grande City for over 20 years. She took on the role of society editor of the Rio Grande Herald -a paper operated by her husband - describing the fashion and style of Rio Grande City weddings for many years. While she was a very involved mother raising four children, she also served as the food service director for the Rio Grande City school district for almost 40 years. She was passionate about her work and committed to improving the nutrition of the children she served. A consummate professional, she was appointed to the USDA National Advisory Council of Child Nutrition. She loved her job and did not retire until age 82. Edna, a devout Catholic, had an unwavering faith in God. She was an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church, was active in the Catholic Mother's Club and participated in numerous fundraising activities on behalf of her Church. She was a member of the Catholic Charismatic prayer group for many years, and, through her membership in the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, was actively involved in the betterment of her community. Edna's engaging warmth and outgoing personality will be greatly missed by everyone who came
in contact with her. Please join her family as they celebrate her life at the visitation on Friday March 18, 2016 from 4-6 PM followed by a rosary at 6:30 PM at Sanchez Funeral Home, 301 E. Second Street, Rio
