Our beloved mother, grandmother, woman of unwavering faith, and cherished friend, Emma T. Barrera, peacefully entered into eternal rest on July 22, 2026, at the age of 96.

Emma was born on December 17, 1929, in Sejita, Texas, in Duval County. Although her journey began there, her heart forever belonged to Rio Grande City, the community she loved and served throughout her life. It was there that she built a life rooted in faith, family, education, and service, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched.

For Emma, serving others was never simply a career—it was her calling.

Armed with a business degree and teaching certification, Emma dedicated 42 years to education. She began her career in the Starr County Superintendent’s Office of Public Instruction, where her dedication and exceptional work ethic led to her appointment as Assistant County School Superintendent in 1959. During that time, she taught citizenship classes to individuals pursuing American citizenship and also served as secretary-bookkeeper for the Starr County Veterans Vocational School. She later found her true calling in the classroom, teaching 7th and 8th grade Mathematics and Social Studies at Ringgold Junior High School, where she inspired generations of students with encouragement and an unwavering belief in the value of education. She shared her love of her faith & education through teaching catechism classes at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Emma’s Catholic faith was the foundation of her life. She was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Church and generously shared her time through organizations including the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, where she was a member for 58 years. She also was an active member of the Serra Club of Rio Grande City, the Texas Retired Teachers Association, and many other civic and religious organizations.

Emma found joy in serving others, whether helping her son with 4-H and proudly helping prepare cattle and sheep for the show ring—earning a reputation as the family’s “professional teaser and hairspray expert”—or simply showing up whenever someone needed a helping hand. She carried herself with grace and unmistakable style, rarely seen without a perfectly coordinated outfit, matching shoes and purse. She found comfort in praying the Rosary, and believed that even life’s smallest routines could become acts of love.

Above every accomplishment, Emma’s greatest joy was her family. She made love feel tangible—in warm breakfasts shared around the kitchen bar, handwritten letters tucked alongside family photographs, and the gentle blessings she whispered over those she loved. Her grandchildren cited that they had their very own personal saint because no one ever left her presence without feeling wrapped in prayer, peace, and unconditional love.

She shared a beautiful 66-year marriage with her beloved husband, Heberto Barrera. Together they built a home centered on faith, laughter, and unconditional love - celebrating every milestone and never missing an opportunity to remind their children and grandchildren how smart, capable, beautiful, and deeply loved they were.

Emma was preceded in death by her parents, Cosme Trejo and Rosenda Molina; her beloved grandmother, Beatrice G. Molina; her uncle, Viterbo Molina; her brother, Gilberto Trejo; and her beloved husband of 66 years, Heberto Barrera.

She is survived by her loving son, Eduardo Barrera and his wife, Cynthia; her devoted daughter, Veronica B. Reyna and her husband, Antonio; her cherished grandchildren, Dayna Reyna Benavides and her husband, Eric; Bianca Barrera-Crouse and her husband, Thomas; and Annika Thomas and her husband, Sam; her beloved niece, Eloisa Overstreet, and her son, Chris; along with many extended family members, former students, colleagues, neighbors, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing her.

If you would like to join family in celebrating Emma’s life, a Visitation will be held on Friday, July 24, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment at Rio Grande City Cemetery at 12:00 p.m.

Emma’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the students she inspired, the faith she modeled, and the countless lives she touched through quiet acts of kindness and unwavering love. Though she will be deeply missed, we find comfort in knowing she is reunited with her beloved Heberto and embraced by the Lord she served so faithfully.
