Eva Berta Canales

Our beloved mother, Eva Berta Canales, passed away on August 11, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was born on July 5, 1937, in Roma, Texas, to Francisco and Luisa Garza.

Eva grew up in La Rosita, Texas, and graduated from Roma High School as Salutatorian of her class. She excelled academically and was also a gifted athlete playing basketball, softball, and track. She often reminisced about the summers spent in Petronila, Texas, picking cotton alongside her mother and brothers.

A woman of deep faith, Eva dedicated her life to her family, raising four children with love and patience. She was active in caring for ill family members and enjoyed sewing, gardening, and her work with the McAllen Independent School District. A talented seamstress, Eva would sew outfits for many relatives with a meticulous care to detail. When computers first entered the work place, Eva taught herself how to use them with only a manual for guidance since she didn’t have a computer at home with which to practice. Eva also had a talent for handwriting. She mastered calligraphy so well that many sought her out to handwrite invitations for special occasions.

Eva is survived with deep sorrow by her four children: Esmeralda (Mario) Lopez, Oscar (Dina) Canales, Leticia Canales, and Daniel Canales; and by five grandchildren, Stephanie (Luis) Dominguez, Matthew Lopez, Mark Lopez, Amanda (Arnold) Gutierrez, and Eric Canales. She is also survived by her sister, Hermila Zavala; her brother, Rolando Garza; and many extended family members and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and four siblings.

Her family extends heartfelt gratitude to Cindy Garza and the staff of Only Love Hospice Care and to Leroy and Javier Moreno and the staff of Legacy Medical Clinic, for their compassionate care.

Visitation will be held Thursday, August 13, 2026, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a Holy Rosary being recited at 6:00 pm at Sanchez Funeral Home of Rio Grande City, Texas. Funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 14, 2026, at 12:00 pm at Santa Rosa de Lima Catholic Church in La Rosita, Texas.
