Gorgonio “Cuate” Guerra Obituary

Gorgonio “Cuate” Guerra was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He left this world suddenly and peacefully on the evening of August 20, 2023, at the age of seventy- nine. He was born to Gorgonio and Florinda Guerra on June 22, 1944, in San Carlos Ranch, Texas. A lifelong resident of Starr County, he attended Rio Grande City schools and graduated from Rio Grande City High School in 1963. In high school, he was a member of the Mighty Rattler Band under the direction of Roque Guerra. He played the trombone and baritone and was a member of the Rio Grande Valley All-Region band on both instruments in his Junior and Senior years. In band, he gained a love of music that he would carry his entire life. In high school he worked in a meat market and later worked at Ramirez Ford in Rio Grande City before
moving to the Community Action Council of South Texas as Director of Nutrition and Food Services for 37 years. He also served in the United States Army Reserves for 15 years. Cuate loved serving his community and was a Little League baseball coach for several years, He was an avid baseball fan and loved the Houston Astros. During baseball season, he could always be found sitting in his recliner watching an Astros game. Cuate was happiest when he was outdoors and spent countless hours tending to his cattle and other animals on his ranch. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved entertaining friends and family at the ranch and was known for his barbecues and amazing brisket. He had strong faith in God and was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church in Rio Grande City. Cuate also had a soft spot for
animals and would often rescue dogs that he would see in the street or near his ranch. He left behind 7 four legged friends. Cuate was preceded in death by his parents Gorgonio and Florinda Guerra, his brother Ramiro Guerra, his sister Perfecta “Peta” Trevino, and his former spouse Noemi Guerra. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Concepcion “Connie” Guerra, daughter Rebecca (Rey), son Jerry (Marilu), and his twin sister Florinda “Cuata” Garza. Cuate is also
survived by 2 grandchildren, Adrian Rivera and Cecilia Rivera, brothers in law, Arturo and Jose “Joe” Alfredo Alvirde, sisters in law, Celia A. Santos, Alicia A. Canales, Elizabeth A. Gazaway, Idette A. Glover, Maria Eugenia Alvirde, and Graciela Nelly Ramirez, mother-in-law Graciela V. Alvirde, and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services have been entrusted to Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City. Viewing will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00
p.m. on Thursday, August 24, 2023. A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. Burial of Cuate’s ashes will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Rio Grande City Cemetery.
