Heron Ignacio Garza died on October 2, 2016 in McAllen, Texas at the age of 71, after a valiant battle with cancer. Heron was born on July 31, 1945 in Rio Grande City, Texas to Lazaro Garza Garcia and Guadalupe O. Garza. He grew up in a large loving family with four sisters and five brothers. Heron was a compassionate, loving, and a hard-working man. He was a man who was there when needed and a man with a sense of humor who gave joy and comfort to all who knew him. Heron graduated from Rio Grande City High School in May 1963. He was a member of the Rio Grande City Rattler Band.
Heron served in the United States Army Reserve from 1963- 1971.
Heron and his brother Lazaro (Chalin) were partners of Lazaro's Auto Parts. He then worked for the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District for thirty-one years. Heron remained a brave, iron-willed man even throughout his final months.
Heron is survived by his wife, Maria del Refugio Reyes; his daughter, Melynda G. Cavazos (Jesse); two granddaughters Sierra and Tyler Garza; stepchildren Adalberto Diaz Jr. (Patricia); Arnoldo Diaz; Mireya M. Rangel (Blas); and Jacob Diaz; sisters Maria Graciela Lopez (Encarnacion) Mission, Texas; Maria Luisa Uribe (Omar) Zapata, Texas; Stella Ward (William +); Isaura de la Cruz (Israel) Rio Grande City, Texas; brothers Lazaro (Elvira), Arturo (Francis), Hector (Berta+), Homero Javier (Lilia); and sister-in-law Selenia S.Garza all of Rio Grande City, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Lazaro and Guadalupe; brother Humberto E. Garza; sister Maura Garza who died in infancy. Pallbearers are Santiago L. Lopez, Luis F. Garza, Patricio E. Garza, Carlos A.Garza, Homero J. Garza Jr. and Hector Rolando Garza.
Visitation will start today, Tuesday, October 4, 2016, from 12 - 9 pm with a Rosary at 7pm. Funeral Mass will be at 10 am on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rio Grande City, Texas. Burial will follow at Rio Grande City Cemetery. Sanchez Funeral Home of Rio Grande City, Texas has been entrusted with arrangements.
