Higinio Fernando Garza

Higinio Fernando Garza passed away at the age of 80 at Hope Lodge in Houston, Texas, on December 7, 2022.
He is survived by his niece and nephews, Rosa Maria Guerra (David) of McAllen, Luis C. Muñoz (Ann) of Kyle, Lauro A. Muñoz of Austin and Richard Garza Ray (Sissy) of Roma. He is also survived by his cousins, Dr. Aida Barrera of Austin, Baudilia Stillwell of Los Angeles, Alcides Dreumont of San Antonio, Adriana Leal of Fort Worth and Henry Danelli of New York.
Higinio is preceded in death by his parents Lauro and Aurora Barrera Garza, his brother Lauro (Bito), his sisters Virginia, Imelda, Idolina and his nephews Lloyd Anthony Ray, Larry Garza and Alberto A. Munoz, Jr. Higinio was born on June 11, 1942 in Rio Grande City, Texas and graduated from Rio Grande City High School. He attended The University of Texas at
Austin, The University of Houston and The University of Texas: Pan American.
In his lifetime he was employed as a teacher and, for most of his life, as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at various hospitals in Texas and throughout the United States. His travels took him to Maine, Montana, Nevada, Hawaii and
other places where he was needed. His most recent post was in Dillingham, Alaska of which he said that working there “has been one of the honors of my life!”
His colleagues at the Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation Laboratory Department in Dillingham shared this with the family, “Higinio had touched our lives. He was smart, kind and always willing to share his knowledge and wisdom. He loved to teach, shared his professional experience to enhance development among his peers. His sense of humor, his never-ending stories
about his childhood, about his much-loved family, his youth, and his escapades. His jokes, laughter, and caring attitude are memories to keep. His wisdom is amazing, and his memory never failed.” Visitation is scheduled on Wednesday, December14, 2022 at 3:00 p.m. A rosary is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. that evening. A partial Latin Mass is scheduled at Sacred Heart of Jesus Los Garcia in Rio Grande City on December 15 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the Los Saenz Cemetery in Roma-Los Saenz immediately after. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Higinio's life. The family would like to thank his dear friends and angels, Thaddeus Forrest Davis of Houston, Janet Dieckgrafe, Cynthia Rogers and Tita Angel of Dillingham, Alaska and all of those who welcomed “The Professor” at BBAH in Dillingham, Alaska. They would also like to thank the staff at M.D.
Anderson Cancer Center and the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge for their efforts and care.
