Isela V. Gonzalez

Isela V. Gonzalez went to Eternal Heaven on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at the age of 67. She was preceded in death by her father, Camilo Vasquez, and her father and mother-in law, Luciano F. Gonzalez and Josefa R. Gonzalez. She is survived by her husband, Jose G. Gonzalez, her son, Jose G. Gonzalez, Jr., her daughter, Deborah G. (Delfino, IV) Lozano; her beloved grandchildren, Delfino Lozano, V, Joseph Jude Lozano, and Christian Emilio Lozano, her mother, Ignacia G. Vasquez, her brothers Humberto (Edna) Vasquez, Oscar Vasquez, and Saul (Olivia) Vasquez, and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, and nieces.

Isela graduated from Texas Woman's University and Laredo State University from where she received undergraduate and graduate degrees in education. During her years of service as an English teacher at Roma High School, she touched the lives of endless number of students who credit her skills, compassion, and commitment for their own professional success. Her interests in reading, the arts, and in developing student leaders made her one of the strongest advocates of her time for programs aimed at promoting academic-based extra-curricular opportunities and a service-oriented student government at the high school. The many awards received by former students in UIL academic contests, the multiple years during which the Roma High School Student Council gained state recognition, and the many students whose path and success were guided by her vision and dreams are evidence of the love and compassion that Isela had for her profession and her students.

Throughout her professional life, Isela excelled as an educator. Her commitment to excellence was recognized by others and acknowledged through awards, among others, that included being named one of ten outstanding teachers in the state by the UT-Texas Exes Organization, one of five outstanding teachers by the Baird Company, named Roma Star by the City of Roma, named outstanding student council sponsor and attended national convention in Spearfish, South Dakota, named Roma High School outstanding teacher, served as ATPA local chapter president, served as CCD teacher for 10 years, and sponsored 10 Our Lady of Refuge Church youths to Denver, Colorado to visit with Pope John XXIII.

Upon her retirement, Isela continued to support the field of education and promote the development of new teachers. She was field facilitator for the Project PaCE teacher-training program sponsored by the Region One ESC.

Isela's passion was also to serve the Lord. As a life-long member of Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church, she served as a lector, CCD teacher, Youth Leader, and Chairperson for the annual jamaicas. The culmination of her faith was her visit to the Vatican.

Her wake will be held at Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Holy Rosary will be conducted at 7:00 PM. Her funeral mass will be held on Thursday, July 25, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Refuge Church in Roma. Her internment will follow at the City of Roma Cemetery. Sanchez Memorial Funeral Home of Roma is in charge of arrangements.
