In Loving Memory of Rafael V. Garza

Rafael V. Garza, 76, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2025 with his loving daughters by his side. Born in Linn, Texas on April 24, 1949, Rafael was raised in Rio Grande City, where he built a life grounded in service, family, and community.
Rafael proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1970 to 1973. After his military service, he became a licensed barber and went on to own and operate his own barbershop, working passionately in his craft for nearly 40 years in the lower Rio Grande Valley. His barbershop became a cornerstone in the community—a place filled with stories, laughter, and connection.
Upon retirement, Rafael returned to his cherished hometown of Rio Grande City, where he spent his later years surrounded by his loving family.
Outside of work, Rafael had a deep love for sports and competition. He was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan, an avid golfer, and an enthusiastic bowler who enjoyed participating in bowling leagues over the years. His humor, warmth, and competitive spirit were felt by all who spent time with him.
Rafael is survived by his loving daughters, Frances (Joe) Sanchez and Deena M. Garza; his former wife Frances Pena Aleman; his cherished grandchildren Klarinda (Luke) Lopez, Benjamin (Victoria) Garza, Kasandra and Joe Sanchez; and his great-granddaughters Blair and Penelope Lopez, who brought him great joy.
He is also survived by his birthmother, Martina U. Garza; his sisters Laurie (Richard) Medina and Lolly (Fred) Arredondo; his brothers Tony and Mario (Edna) Garza; his brother-in-law Bedredin “Bele” Rodriguez and sister-in-law Linda Garza; and numerous nieces and nephews who admired and loved him deeply.
Rafael was preceded in death by his adopted parents, Prudencio and Cleotilde V. Garza; his father, Maximiano Garza; his sister, Alicia G. Rodriguez; his brother, David Garza; and his beloved daughter, Susie M. Garza.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Rafael’s caregivers for their compassion, support, and kindness during his final days.
Rafael’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His dedication to his family will never be forgotten.
Rio Grande City - Rafael V. Garza, 76, died Thursday July 24, 2025, at DHR Health Hospice in Edinburg, TX. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Sanchez Funeral Home in Rio Grande City, TX.
