Raul Barrera, a respected member of the Rio Grande City and Roma communities, passed away on May 24, 2026, in Garceno, Texas. Born on July 27, 1928, in Garceno, Texas, Mr. Barrera’s life spanned nearly a century, marked by dedication to family and community.
Mr. Barrera is survived by his beloved wife, Maria Luisa Vasquez Barrera, who stood by his side throughout their many years together. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Frances Solis (and her husband Rudy Solis), Alica Garcia (and her husband Carlos Garcia), and Ilianna Martinez. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Maribel Garcia (her husband Rodolfo Ramos), Sandra Garcia, Mike Solis (and his wife Melody), Nick Solis (and his wife Cindy), Chris Solis (and his wife Patty), Alexis Martinez, Matthew Martinez, Isabella Martinez, Isaac Noah Martinez, Joshua Martinez, and their father Joe Martinez; his great-grandchildren, Mia Solis, Cylee Solis, Florance Solis, Christian Gomez, Marina Alvarado, Lily Martinez, Luis Alberto Garcia, Andrea Kristina Garcia, and Jose Antonio Garcia; and his great-great-grandchild, Alyssabeth Garcia. He is also survived by his siblings, ANASTACIA Lopez, Mario Barrera, Maria Luisa Barrera, Elena Lemoa, and Tomas Barrera. Mr. Barrera was preceded in death by his first wife, Odilia M. Barrera; his sons, Ricard, Raul, and Juan Octavio; his daughters, Raquel Aimee and Frances Solis; his parents, Pedro Barrera+ and Maria Dolores Escobar Barrera+, whose memory he honored throughout his life; his brothers, Hilario Barrera+, Ricardo Barrera+, Arturo Barrera+, and Pedro Barrera Jr.+ (Maria Elena Barrera); and his sister, Rafela Olivarez+.
The family will welcome friends and loved ones for visitation on May 28, 2026, from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Sanchez Funeral Home, located at 301 East Second Street, Rio Grande City, TX 78582. A Rosary will be held at the same location on May 28 at 6:00 PM.
On May 29, visitation will continue from 8:00 AM to 10:30 AM at Sanchez Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on May 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Sagrado Corazon de Jesus, 4987 Old Escobares Hwy 83, Roma, TX 78584. Following the Mass, the burial service will take place at Roma City Cemetery beginning at 12:15 PM. Raul Barrera will be remembered for his strength, unwavering commitment to his family, and the profound impact he had on his community. His presence will be greatly missed but forever cherished by those who knew and loved him.
