Ruben Claudio Lopez, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, and cherished member of the Rio Grande City community, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, in McAllen, Texas, at the age of 84. Born on June 6, 1941, in Rio Grande City, Texas, Ruben lived a life rooted in faith, family, education, and service to others. A proud graduate of Rio Grande City High School Class of 1959, Ruben continued his education at Texas A&I University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He later obtained a master’s degree through the National Science Foundation, reflecting his lifelong commitment to learning and academic excellence. For 45 years, Ruben dedicated his life to education, inspiring generations of students through his patience, wisdom, and unwavering belief in the transformative power of knowledge. Throughout his distinguished teaching career, he served students and families in Roma, San Isidro, Corpus Christi, Edinburg, and Rio Grande City. His influence reached far beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on countless young people whose lives he helped shape. Ruben was deeply devoted to his community and family. He proudly served as President of the Rio Grande City Little League, dedicating his time to supporting and mentoring local youth. He was also a loving and supportive father who enthusiastically encouraged his sons in their pursuits in Rattler football, FFA, 4-H, and Boy Scouts. His steady guidance, encouragement, and example of hard work and integrity will remain treasured memories to all who knew him. Ruben shared 58 years of marriage with his wife, Melba Salinas Lopez. He is survived by his wife Melba; his son, Roderick Lopez (Becky); his grandchildren, Ruben Lopez III (Marily), Christopher Lopez (Allie), Kathryn Ortiz (Noah), and Matthew Lopez; and his cherished great-grandchildren, Ruben Eden Lopez, Roel Lopez, Mariany Lopez, Roman Lopez, and Carlos Mack Lopez. He is also survived by his brother, Romeo Lopez, (Lydia Lopez). Ruben was preceded in death by his son, Ruben Claudio Lopez Jr.; his parents, Miguel and Maria B. Lopez; his sister, Maria De La Luz Hinojosa; and his brothers, Rogerio Lopez, Rene Roland Lopez, Roberto Lopez, and Rodolfo Lopez. Family, friends, former students, and community members are invited to honor and celebrate Ruben’s life during a visitation on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Sanchez Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the same location. Though his passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who loved him, Ruben Claudio Lopez’s legacy will live on through the many lives he touched as an educator, mentor, family man, and friend. He will be remembered for his kindness, humility, dedication to education, and unwavering love for his family and community. Ruben will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
