Mercedes, Texas – Sixto Guerra Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 17, 2025, at his residence in Mercedes, Texas.
He is survived by his wife, Hermila D. Guerra; one son, Sixto Guerra III; one sister, Maria Elisa Escobar; two nephews, Robert Escobar and Joey Escobar; and one niece, Melissa Limas Escobar. He was preceded in death by his father, Sixto Guerra, and his mother, Saturnina G. Guerra.
His work life began at his family ranch, Mirasoles Ranch, where he picked cotton and tended to his father’s cattle herd. Throughout his life, he worked in various trades, including jewelry, oil field work, and, most notably, as a butcher and meat cutter.
In 1987, he opened Guerra's Meat Market and worked there for 40 years until his death. He worked in all parts of the business, from the meat market to the kitchen, and was known for making 89-cent hamburgers.
His advice to anyone who asked was, "Have faith in God, have faith in yourself, respect your family, and most importantly, stay humble no matter how successful you get in life."
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 19, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. in English.
Visitation will continue on Monday, October 20, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:40 p.m.
Burial will be at the Rio Grande City Cemetery.
